Allergy Symptoms and Treatment at Pulmonary Associates
Allergies are extremely common and can range from being a nuisance to being life-threatening. More than 50 million adults and children in the US suffer from allergies every year.
Allergies occur when the body’s immune system overreacts to a foreign substance. The most common allergy triggers include:
- Pollen from grass, trees, and weeds
- Animal dander
- Dust mites
- Insect stings
- Mold spores
- Food (common culprits are milk, eggs, peanuts, wheat, and shellfish)
- Latex
- Medications
Allergic reactions can vary from person to person and range from minor to severe. Symptoms may include sneezing, a runny nose, itching, swelling, and the appearance of hives. If the throat or airways swell and prevent the intake of oxygen, it can be life-threatening – a reaction known as anaphylactic shock.
There are a number of treatments available for allergies, including immunotherapy, antihistamines, and steroids, along with nonpharmaceutical methods and lifestyle changes.
At Pulmonary Associates, our allergists have a wealth of knowledge about how best to deal with your specific type of allergy.
